Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In a perfect world, I would know all of my parents at this point in the year.
In all honesty, I still have a handful of parents that I have never met. I know their voice, just not their face. These parents need to work endlessly to support their children, therefore they do not have time for parent conferences. Older siblings come to pick up smaller ones because their parents are working. Some families have their eldest dress, feed and walk the younger siblings to school every morning because they need to be at work by four in the morning. These are single parent homes that have parents that are dedicated to providing for their families.
My parents and school community enjoy coming to events that we have at our school. My parents, even with their hectic schedules, try their best to show support in every way possible. I would love to help them create more opportunities to have many special moments. This project will empower me to make change. The success of my students has everything to do with partnerships their parents and I have made.
My Project
Helen Keller said "Alone we can to so little; together we can do so much." Such is the partnership between a parent, student and teacher. My vision is to have families that my grade level is directly involved with spend quality time on our campus.
Boardgames and puzzles are the key that will help us unlock the beginning of new partnerships.
I will plan game nights for the family. We will excluded no one, as students bring in their parents to play games with other families. Imagine playing charades with your friend and their parent. At the other end of the table you can see another group of families playing Jenga and Connect Four. Families will be able to move around and play one to two different games every time we have an Family Game Night.
Imagine families coming together on a beautiful afternoon, not to watch a game of kickball, but to be in the game. Many of the materials I am asking for will make these types of interactions possible. One family challenging another to a game of dodgeball I our gym. Two best friends decided to battle it out, family versus another in a game of flag football. Siblings racing past each other, zooming across the blacktop in EZRoller Ride On carts. Fathers attempting to dutch jumprope for the first time ever with their daughter and two other people who they just met, at one time. It hasn't happened, yet I can hear the endless laughter and see smiles growing wider than the goal post on our once lonely, soccer field.
