Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I love the reactions of my students, when they dominate a computer game level, their glee and enthusiasm is hard to match in another classroom activity. That same enthusiasm is evident when they program on the computer and see the results created. I teach students from Kindergarten to the 5th grade on a rotated schedule.
Many of my students are confronted with the lack of access to technology and other extracurricular opportunities.
Many do not have the internet in their homes. Reading and writing in English is a challenge for many students, English being their second language. Many of my students do not have the opportunity to travel to different places or even attend after school activities.
Their lack of resources do not mean they are not interested in learning, far from it! The efforts made to come to school are evident for many of our students, they eagerly arrive early, dressed neatly and are ready for class.
When they enter the computer lab, they rush to sit down and see which assignments are needed for completion.
My Project
The Snap Circuits, Lego kits, Lego Boost Toolbox and the Let's Go Code kits will challenge my students to think beyond the classroom walls. They will build projects and envision solutions to those projects. My students realize that they must keep up with technology and how that will shape all our lives in the future.
My students in the 4th and 5th grades will be able to use the Snap Circuits to create various electronics and circuits, the basic circuitry projects in the kit will teach my students about many components of electronics in our daily lives, such as capacitors and integrated circuits.
The Lego kits will help my younger learners in Kindergarten through 2nd grade to acquire and develop spatial skills along with their fine motor skills.
Learning Resources Code & Go Robot Mouse Activity Set will greatly enhance my 1st through 3rd graders critical thinking and problem solving skills, introduce basic programming as they move towards robotics in the upper elementary grades.
My students in the 3rd-5th grades will increase their programming skills in robotics, enhance their programming skills in Scratch and Lego Mindstorms. This age group will also be utilizing the Thames and Cosmos Motors and Generators kit, to learn about electricity, motion and generators, and especially the real-life applications.
