Today, First Grade Readers; Tomorrow, Fearless Leaders
Help me give my students an inviting classroom library that is rich in reading materials that includes books such as the "I Can Read!" Readers, the "Grammar Tales Book Set," and the "Eyewitness Nonfiction Readers".
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students in my class are hard working, show perseverance, and have good character. They are enthusiastic learners who have a passion for learning and living. My school is located in the heart of a community in a busy city in Southern California. A majority of our students are of Latin descent and come from homes where Spanish is the primary language spoken.
My students come from low-income, economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. As if suffering from the effects of poverty wasn't enough, many of my students are being exposed to domestic violence, child abuse, neglect, lack of health care, hunger, homelessness, and substance abuse. Their families do not have access to resources and there is very little support at home. Nevertheless, my students show an appreciative joy and have a positive attitude when they come to school each day.
My Project
The books that I am requesting will help me create a library filled with many different types of texts. During independent reading time, these books will allow students to practice the decoding strategies they have learned. The students will read books that are appropriate to their reading level making them feel successful. The students will experience a smoothly operating reading process, they will exercise choice, and will develop reading interests.
When students have a choice in choosing the books they read and can socially interact with others about the various texts they are exposed to, they increase their interest and engagement.
The new, and exciting books will help my first grade readers be fearless leaders.
