Throughout the academic year, my focus has been on fostering increased reader engagement among my students. I have observed a notable correlation between their enthusiasm for reading and the presence of a diverse array of books across various genres that align with their interests. Notably, upon introducing graphic novels into our reading curriculum, I witnessed a significant enhancement in both their reading and writing engagement. Furthermore, I have observed a positive impact on student behavior and peer relationships through the incorporation of books that address coping skills and align with our classroom management strategies, effectively reflecting our focus on fostering Emotional Intelligence (EI) and social-emotional learning (SEL) competencies.
Students began immersing themselves in reading activities during any available free time, eagerly borrowing books to continue their reading journey at home, and even endeavoring to craft their own narratives inspired by the graphic novels studied in class.
Students have demonstrated the ability to recall details and apply coping strategies from SEL literature to real-life situations encountered throughout the year.
