This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

1st grade is an exciting year where students learn the foundational skills for reading. My students are most engaged when it involves hands-on activities and the chance for their imagination to take over. When they are given these opportunities they show significant growth and reach their goals. The excitement and joy that they get when they have reached a new reading goal is impactful.

Roald Dahl once said, “I have a passion for teaching kids to become readers, to become comfortable with a book, not daunted.

Books shouldn’t be daunting, they should be funny, exciting, and wonderful; and learning to be a reader gives a terrific advantage.” The products I have selected will support my students in developing foundational reading skills during small-group literacy instruction. Legos, letter stamps, and Bananagrams will allow my students to become successful in phonemic awareness. In which they can segment and identify letter sounds within a word using manipulatives. This will also allow them to make connections between letter sounds and corresponding letter formation. With these materials, they are given a hands-on opportunity to create words based off of their phonetic ability. These materials will allow them to decode words on their own and it eventually becomes an automatic habit leading to them developing a confidence and love for reading rather than being afraid of it.
