This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students make each day a new and exciting experience! Despite the adversity some of my kiddos have already faced as first graders, they come to school each day with smiles and LOTS of energy. First grade is a year of tremendous growth, and my students' enthusiasm makes my job a blast.
Diversity is one of our greatest strengths, and our differences in learning styles, cultures, abilities, and ethnicity create a strong community of learners in our classroom.
The majority of students at our school come from economically disadvantaged families, and all students receive free breakfast, lunch, and snacks each day. Our staff works hard to ensure that school is a place where all students feel welcomed and supported.
My Project
One of my biggest goals as a first-grade teacher is for my students to LOVE reading by the middle of the school year. First graders tend to jump reading levels more quickly than students in other grades. In fact, they are expected to go through twice as many reading levels than kindergartners according to the grade level correlations created by Fountas and Pinnell.
My students do not have any difficulty finding books that interest them, but their ever-changing reading levels make it more challenging to find books that match their current reading abilities.
These leveled readers will help give my students options that will not only increase their enthusiasm for reading but also their skills in decoding and comprehension. As a new teacher, my library currently consists of mostly used books, and my students with the lowest levels sometimes have trouble finding books they can read. These additions to our library would be very greatly appreciated by our class!
