My students need books. I am a first year teacher which means that my classroom library still has a lot of growing to do. My students need engaging titles so they can learn to love reading.
Our classroom is comprised of 21 amazing young and diverse learners. My school pulls students from all over the district which means that we have a very diverse population of students, in regards to race, languages spoken at home and socioeconomic status. We are all very different and unique! There are 8 different languages that are spoken in our classroom, we all look different and we come from different types of homes and experiences.
While we may look different and come from different backgrounds, we have one thing in common, we love to learn together!
I am a first year teacher which means that I have limited means and resources for my classroom. Most of the educational materials that my school has not purchased for me must be purchased with my own money. I want to provide my students with many opportunities to learn to love to read and having a large classroom library will help me achieve that.
My Project
One of our favorite things to do together as a class is read. I read at least three times a day to my students and they also have time everyday to explore books independently. Because we are reading so often during the day I need to make sure that I have enough books for my students so that they are able to have many new reading options and that they are able to read new titles which interest them. I am constantly borrowing books from colleagues or visiting our school library to find books that will interest my students. While these have been great options for me, I would prefer to have a personal collection that could permanently stay in our room.
My school is unique in that it pulls students from all over the district.
This means that my students come from many different backgrounds in relation to home and family life, academic abilities and general school readiness. I have chosen books that will specifically engage and enrich my students for years to come. Many of the books I have chosen deal with topics such as behavior at school, how to deal with and express feelings and how to be a good friend. These are topics that will benefit my students especially since many of my students have not been in a real school setting before.
Additionally I have chosen books with familiar characters and rich storylines which will engage my students and encourage them to love reading. For example, my students love the character Pete the Cat. By offering them titles with these familiar and well loved characters I am offering them a comfortable entry point into the world of literacy. Thank you so much for your support!
