Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
How does the moon change shapes? Why can I see the moon in the daytime? How does the moon glow? These are just a few of the questions my third graders ask each year when it's time to study the phases of the moon.
My students are a great group of eager learners.
Most of them come from low income families and over half are English learners. When I first came to the school in 2007 it was in Program Improvement status; basically our students were not making the academic gains they needed to. Over the past few years the staff, students and community have dedicated themselves to improving academic performance and it has shown. In 2010 we were awarded with the title of California Distinguished school!
My Project
Science can be amazingly engaging or dreadfully boring, depending a lot on how it is presented. Imagine having to learn about the moon only from a boring text book. I have requested hands-on kits to help engage and promote understanding of the moon and its phases. Additionally, I have requested a class set of the book The Moon Book by Gail Gibbons. I currently have one copy of this book and the children really liked it last year. With the help of this project, twenty kids will not have to share one book.
Science, math and technology crucial subjects our students need to study in order to prepare for their futures.
They need to be critical thinkers and problem solvers in order to be successful in the job market of the future. This is just one small step to get them there... just imagine what happens when a child has a positive experience with science at a young age. He grows up to embrace it later on.
