To See Or Not To See (That is the Question)

My students need an ELMO to bring Science to life and really be able to "see" actual science taking place right before their eyes.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When I was in school I remember the classroom being a fun, exciting place where science discoveries were made and math concepts came alive. You can help my students make powerful learning connections by providing them with the ELMO.

I teach a first grade class with a lot of personality.

This class has a special gift of bringing smiles and laughter to all classes they come across. My job is to take these young students and teach them the importance of loving to learn. They must learn how to read in first grade. I love to teach reading through science and social studies activities. My students come from a very diverse population. I have students from 7 countries from Pakistan to Mexico. I truly believe that all students must be treated equitably and that is why I teach at my school. I have 60% of my class who speak English as a second language. Most of my students are economically disadvantaged and receive free lunch. My schools test scores are not where they should be. As a first grade teacher, (my students do not take the state test)it is my job to inspire kids to read all types of books. It is not equitable that my students receive far less materials than other students at well to do schools.

My Project

Think of a classroom with bright colored walls, beautiful pictures for vocabulary terms, posters made in all sorts of colors, student work hanging on the walls. This is my classroom. I already teach my students using many engaging and visual items, but I am asking for and ELMO camera to bring these visuals to life. Instead of using a picture to label the parts of a flower think of bringing an actual flower in the class, roots and all, to label on the document camera. This will help inspire even the quiet kids in the class. My students love to look at the small animal pictures in our life science book. What if I put a small caterpillar on the camera and the students really got to experience life science. Learning can really take place on another level with the use of an ELMO in the classroom.

Discovering reading through science.

When students actually have the willingness and desire to learn new things, it takes all the guess work out of the teachers. Being able to teach using a document camera will make my life science unit that I created come to life. My students will remember all parts of a flower and discover different small animals using the document camera. I am so excited to start this project. Thank you for taking the time to read my project.
