Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"To read, or not to read, that is the question". My students need to learn how the history of the period can come alive, the language of artistic passion, and the ability to connect with some of the greatest literary minds in history through reading and the performing arts; this why we read.
For some students, the performing arts create opportunities to comprehend the incomprehensible and learn that studying literature can be great fun.
My students have not had these opportunities because of their diverse backgrounds and low family incomes. I want them to experience the world beyond their normal cultural limitations. Parents have chosen our charter school for a purpose, and that purpose was to give the students the tools needed to transcend the environment in which they grew-up.
My Project
Survival as a teacher in a classroom depends on the materials you use to capture, ignite, and guide students to a final result. Performing a Shakespearean Comedy, "Taming of the Shrew", and reading the drama "Macbeth" plus viewing the DVDs will help my students develop a connection to literature, reading and the performing arts. For many of my students, this will be their first exposure to Shakespeare and reading dialog in a play form. I want them to love it. I want them to remember reading and performing these plays when they are old. I have also added a modern novel Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold, that has an interesting readability for this age group with a Shakespearean theme. I want them to foster this knowledge of reading in their own children someday. I want to change this generation of non-readers to lovers of literature.
These inner-city students are hopeful that they will enter our world as equals after graduation.
Help me help them love literature. Your funding can give students the materials the school district can not afford to provide under the current conditions. You will make it possible for my students, ESL or English as a Second Language, to experience crucial literary works in many different forms.
