Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
It is said that a teacher affects eternity, you can never tell where their influence stops. This is what I strive to do each day, influence my students to become positive, efficient learners and readers. My classroom contains a large population of English Learners, as well as students with special needs, all nestled into a high-need community
Today, students face unique obstacles in their lives that did not plague many adults as children. They must deal with family separations, parents losing jobs, and even becoming homeless. Students need to see school as a safe haven, but also must learn how to better themselves and their learning through reading and education. It is my job to guide these students and mold them into proficient readers, while dealing with high stakes testing on a daily basis. Students must pass three state tests in fourth grade. In order for students to pass, they must have a true understanding of reading and literacy. Students must be given the opportunity to experience non-fiction texts full of pictures and information that is meaningful to them. This will help them to create concrete images in their heads of what they are learning. These concrete images and positive experiences in reading will not only create life long learners, but will also allow students to be successful in high stake testing situations.
The key to these experiences is allowing kids enjoy what they are doing. My students need to have fun while learning, which is exactly what the non-fiction book sets and grammar sets do. Students are allowed enjoy what they are reading, while really delving into higher-level thinking skills without even knowing it. These books will provide literacy experiences for all students in my classroom from students who are learning English, to students with special needs, to the average happy go lucky fourth grade student.
You can make it possible for my students to love reading. You can make a difference in the life of a child that can help them now, but more importantly will allow them to be successful in school now and into the future.
