My students need computer tablets and pencils to complete individualized online math lessons and interactive math notebooks to increase their math proficiency.
"A mind is terrible thing to waste." NAACP This quote resonates with me because my students, though they come from impoverished homes, can have the mindset to compete on any level if given the right environment, encouragement, and motivation. They come to school eager and ready to learn every day.
I teach in a low socio-economic Title I urban school district where approximately 80% of my students receive free and reduced price lunch, over 15% are identified as special needs, and 5% are ESOL.
Many of the students come from single family homes in which one or more of the family members is incarcerated. My students are very bright students and need the right environment coupled with the encouragement and motivation to be successful. The school is often the only safe haven they have. My school is an awesome community of learners with incredible teachers and wonderful administrators who provide a nurturing and enriching learning environment for our students. These students are under-served and just need someone to care about them and their success. I often refer to my students as "Mathematicians at Work." They truly love math and are excited about solving problems with their classmates. Because of their quest and drive for learning mathematics, I push them hard daily.
My Project
My students need computer tablets and pencils to complete individualized online math lessons and interactive math notebooks to increase their math proficiency. It is essential that teachers and students have regular access to technologies that support and advance mathematical sense making, reasoning, problem solving and communication (NCTM 2015). I want my students to use technology as an educational resource in the classroom and I want my class to be one of fun, exploration, and most of all learning. It is my goal to develop students' understanding, stimulate their interest and increase their proficiency in mathematics through the use of technology. My students need 10 tablet computers and pencils for a math learning center. The tablets will serve several purposes. At this center, students will be able to review and practice for math intervention, develop new math skills using various math software, view flipped lessons from teacher, take formative assessments while using other math educational applications. Additionally students will be able to use the tablets in groups to participate in individualized, group and whole group instruction.
The donations from DonorsChoose will improve my classroom by allowing my students to have access to technology on a daily basis without having to be scheduled to go to the library.
Students will be able to complete math class assignments and not have to worry about not having web access. Having access to technology allows students to see connections between math and the real world. Also, the tablets will allow students to become proficient users of technology which transfers to real life skills.
