My Students
I teach in an amazing school located in the heart of a high poverty area. The subjects that I instruct are English and English Honors during the normal school day, in addition, I teach American Sign Language after school for the students who are interested in learning a non-aural, nonverbal language. All of these students love to learn in unique ways involving arts. While I ensure that the appropriate information is passed on to them, I love to help them master the information through many different art venues which ensures excessive excitement in the learning process.
My Project
To practice ASL or not to practice ASL truly depends on you. My students are in need of Logitech webcams to practice their signing skills. The Webcams give them the opportunity to see what they look like signing. Are the hand shapes correct? Did they use the proper non-manual markers to express the correct grammar? It can be tricky when you are not used to using your hands, body, and face to speak for you.
The webcams allow the students to see both what they are doing right in the language, as well as what they need to fix.
Students will sign on them (expressive language skills) and review what they did to check if they did it correctly (receptive language skills). They will also be able to submit work using these webcams since ASL is not a written language.
