This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I love working in an intentionally diverse community. 75% of our student body receives free and reduced lunch. Our students come from all over the world, and include many first generational English learners.
I have students who are learning how to count, interact socially, sound out words and read, write stories or responses, and use their words to express themselves.
Along with my students, I grow each day and as they reach their individual goals, I find ways to bridge students' learning to real life experiences that are culturally relevant. I consider being a special education teacher a gift to facilitate a student's independent growth.
My Project
The color-coded rolling cart will assist students with organizing and pairs nicely with our current system, which will increase practice for those with organizing goals. The multi-section folders will help students to organize assignments based on their learning and/or behavioral goals. For example, a student may have a goal for vowel blends (ea, ei, oa), making complete sentences, subtracting numbers 20 under (17-9=), and staying on task for 7 minutes without being prompted. That can be a lot to keep up with each day, which is why these folders can certainly help!
The sheet protectors allow students to preserve certificates earned for each lesson mastered and project assignments for their IB Portfolios.
We also use the dry erase markers on these so that we can reuse printed sheets for learning games or calculations without wasting paper. For our semi-permanent installations, the laminating pouches allow for student made materials to be displayed for the entire unit. Students take pride in their work when it is placed on the bulletin board for all to see. The index cards are most often used for student or teacher made flashcards for math facts, spelling words, phonics, or projects.
