To Listen Is to Love, Listening Center for Eager Readers
My students need Personal CD Players, headphones, batteries and a storage container for the items as listening centers for reading. To increase their reading ability, fluency and comprehension.
My students are 1st graders from Ellicott City, MD. They are hard workers who are eager to learn. They especially love to read and write during English Language Arts time. The students in my class have a range of abilities from students who are below grade level to those who are above grade level. The students also come from various cultures, socioeconomic status and have varying support systems at home.
A commonality that my students have is their love of listening to books aloud.
The problem that we face is that we are lacking resources for a listening center in the classroom. We are in need of portable cd players and headphones to support students being able to hear books read aloud to them. This would greatly impact all students, especially my students who are below grade level and English Language Learners.
My Project
The students will be able to use these items during our independent Daily 5 rotations. Having listening center supplies will give the students to opportunity to listen to books being read to model appropriate fluency, phrasing and expression when reading. By listening to others read, the students will begin to incorporate those elements into their own reading. The portable cd players will be used with books that comes with a cd. The students will be able to listen to the books via portable cd player and headphones while they follow along in the book. The batteries will be used to power the portable cd players. Portable cd players go through numerous batteries when they are being used often, so I am asking for 2 packs to ensure the students are not able to use them. The plastic tote will be used to store all of the materials. This way it is organized and the students will be able to easily find what they need to utilize the listening center.
By listening to reading, the students are also able to focus less on decoding unknown words, but to truly think about the book and their ability to comprehend what they hear.
The students love listening to a book being read to them and it especially helps to support those students who are below grade level or English Language Learners.
