My Students

My students come from a small town located just outside of Scranton, PA. The school has 927 students and 40% of the students get free or reduced-price lunch. Many of the students are in need of basic supplies such as notebooks, binders, pens, pencils, etc. as the number of our economically disadvantage students grow. The school is located just a few minutes outside of Scranton, Pa. and is pizza capital of the world, a honor the students take with great pride.

In the past materials that have been requested for classroom use has been cut due to a lack of funding.

I can not, in good conscience, ask the families of my students to buy the book themselves. This would be an unfair burden placed upon parents who are already struggling to make ends meet. This novel is important for students to read and know about. Segregation, racism, and prejudice are all issues my students will face in their lifetime. It is important that students understand empathy and compassion before they enter the "real world" if we want our society to thrive in the future.

My Project

Over the years my students have enjoyed the ground breaking novel To Kill A Mockingbird. Time has not been kind to the paperback novels. It has gotten to the point where they are falling apart. Most do not have covers and some are missing chapters.

It is no fault of the students, the novels have been used for over seven years.

That takes quite a toll on a paperback. I have three hard cover copies of the novel from the early 1980s that are still in near perfect condition. My hopes that are once I have a classroom set of novels I can continue to teach this important novel for years to come. The bookcases will be home to the novels and replace ones that are broken and falling apart.
