My Students

The New School of San Francisco is a public school that currently serves students from kindergarten to fifth grade. I was lucky enough to help teach our first cohort of second graders, and now after two years teaching in Guadalajara, I am so thrilled to return to that same group of kids as we open our first fifth grade cohort.

These fifth graders are proof that inquiry is for all children.

Our cohort is diverse by design- socioeconomically, racially, and in terms of family structure. Most of these fifth graders have been learning in an inquiry model since NSSF opened when they were in first grade, and it is so fun to watch them apply their inquiry skills to grapple with complex problems. Fifth grade will see them planning for space exploration missions, delving into their own developing identities and where they stand in relation to the complex historical and economic contexts of our nation, designing their own ecosystems, and directing their first independent inquiry question and processes. It is going to be an absolute blast.

Thank you for helping us set our first cohort of fifth grade up for success this year!

My Project

Our first unit, or inquiry arc, will challenge our fifth graders to grapple with this question: what happens if we destroy Earth's ecosystems? Where will we go? As part of this guiding question, students will be creating artificial biomes that would support life in space, as well as designing and building space rovers to complete tasks that humans can't.

We'll be learning how to code robotics programs, use gears, levers, and sensors as part of a working robot, and work collaboratively in small teams to solve meaty, complex problems.

I've been lucky enough to use Lego Robotics as a teaching tool at an affluent private school where robotics costs were just an expected part of the curriculum budget, and I've seen how excited kids are when they get to work with these tools. All of our kids at the New School of San Francisco deserve this opportunity too, so thank you so much for helping to give them this opportunity. It is this type of skill that will make them engaged students and successful 21st century citizens.
