Our first unit, or inquiry arc, will challenge our fifth graders to grapple with this question: what happens if we destroy Earth's ecosystems? Where will we go? As part of this guiding question, students will be creating artificial biomes that would support life in space, as well as designing and building space rovers to complete tasks that humans can't. We'll be learning how to code robotics programs, use gears, levers, and sensors as part of a working robot, and work collaboratively in small teams to solve meaty, complex problems. I've been lucky enough to use Lego Robotics as a teaching tool at an affluent private school where robotics costs were just an expected part of the curriculum budget, and I've seen how excited kids are when they get to work with these tools. All of our kids at the New School of San Francisco deserve this opportunity too, so thank you so much for helping to give them this opportunity. It is this type of skill that will make them engaged students and successful 21st century citizens.
