My Students

Shakespeare, beyond being the greatest writer in the English Language, belongs to us all as part of our cultural heritage. Yet, for many of my students, the drama and beauty Shakespeare eludes them as they struggle with the language of Elizabethan England.

My students are middle school students whose abilities range from gifted to struggling readers.

For most, video games, movies, and Facebook have taken the place of reading and although they are highly visual, they can have difficulty imagining the stories they read.

My Project

The graphic novel version of Hamlet will help my students visualize the action of Shakespeare's plays, making them come alive and be more engaging (not to mention less intimidating)to my students. By supporting students' understanding of the plot, we will be better able to focus on the beauty of the language, the essential questions the play poses, and what Shakespeare has to offer a modern audience.

Something as simple as a graphic novel can make all the difference between students' appreciating and engaging with Shakespeare and merely trudging through it as they struggle to understand the language.

At this age, it is vital to not turn students off to the Bard. Your donation will support their cultural literacy and help me leave them wanting to read more.
