To Be or Not To Be: Let's Keep Theatre in School

My students need 20 copies Everything About Theatre books and 1 teacher's edition for the new drama class which was created but not funded.

Our students love the theatre, but standardized testing takes the stage. I teach 9th grade English and 9-12 drama. We have English books and materials, but drama is not funded. The 58 students in drama club have a thirst to learn and nothing to drink. We have at least 3 students this year and several in the past go on to college to pursue a career in the performing arts.

There are 697 students and over 100 of them are active in the performing arts throughout the year. We produce an all-school musical, a senior class play, a student-produced drama club performance, and several other shows throughout the community. THESE KIDS LOVE THEATRE and there are no materials to help teach them. When I was finally given a drama class, I was on my own to come up with materials. I can't let them down because, for some of these students, the stage is the only positive reinforcement they get. Our community is high in unemployment and low in self-esteem. I can't do anything about the unemployment, but I can give them a boost in self-esteem every time I teach them a new theatre method. The theatre is a team-building activity as well, and the friends they make will be friends forever.

My students need 20 student editions and 1 teacher's edition of Everything About Theatre books for the new drama class which was created but funded through the English department; therefore all orders were cut due to test teaching needs for improving writing and reading scores taking precedent.

Although my knowledge of community theatre is a bit extensive, I feel ill-equipped to teach serious drama students. I found a book, "Everything about Theatre!: The Guidebook of Theatre Fundamentals" that will give them the basics and, in addition, allow them to explore the more difficult aspects of the theatre. With this book, I can differentiate the instruction of my class according to the student's individual needs. I don't have to give them all the same handout; they can all turn to a different section and continue to learn a process as far as their desire will take them. The students in the class will, in turn, work with the students in the shows and the end product will be magnificent.
