My Students

In today's world, students need exposure to technology. An LCD projector would allow my students to have technology integrated into their lessons. I am also working on my Nat'l Board Teaching Certification to be the best teacher I can be. A projector would help me fulfill technology requirements.

My students attend a 100% low-income school.

They are remarkable students who want to learn, yet go through dangerous neighborhoods to make it to school. Almost all have obstacles to overcome: parents who are addicted to drugs, incarcerated, unemployed, etc. One of my students lived in a home that caught fire due to faulty wiring. They moved to a different house, which got shot up in a random drive-by shooting. The family had to move again. Our school has taken drastic measures to transform itself, as the students are attending a school where the average ACT score is a 14. We have a high dropout rate and low attendance, but again, we are being proactive in implementing improvements. Our school is older and, until last year, needed major renovations. It made the news when it began renovations because of its poor condition. Though there were renovations, we still do not have all the technological resources needed for our students to be successful in today's society.

My Project

Because many teachers in my school have multiple classrooms (this year I had 3), it is hard to gain access to technology. Having an LCD projector would allow them to have technology integrated into their curriculum because LCD projectors are so mobile. Because we have a high dropout rate and low attendance, having engaging lessons is a critical component to getting students to school. An LCD projector helps makes lessons more interactive. It also allows us to incorporate other technology into our lessons - exposing students to even more technology - such as using video clips. Students sometimes mention feeling short-changed with access to technology in comparison to our city's other high schools, so a projector allows students to witness the technological advances the school is trying to make. Since LCD projectors enlarge what is on the screen, this also helps our students with poor eyesight to see things easier (many have never been to an eye doctor).

I really want to be the best teacher I can be to my students.

Though I feel confident in my teaching abilities, I know having an LCD projector could enhance my lessons. Engagement with students, especially students from my school, is so important. I will do whatever it takes to keep them engaged. However, having an LCD projector would be a monumental first step.
