Our Title I school is located in Northern Mississippi. We have a wonderful group of family and students! I am a special education teacher for PreK-2nd grade students. My students have a wide variety of learning characteristics and special education eligibilities with most sensory and/or behavior needs.
Each child enters our school with their own sense of wonder and curiosity, while also having their own individual needs.
My student's needs greatly vary from non-verbal to children high functioning on the Autism Spectrum. Some have language needs - receptive, expressive, and/or articulation, as well as health concerns or disabilities.
Due to COVID19 and social distancing guidelines, our families were given a choice between full-time in-person instruction and full-time virtual learning instruction. All of our teachers, including myself, teach both sets of students throughout the week!
Our classroom and school is a special place where children receive the love, resources, and accommodations needed to learn and grow each day!
Have you ever wondered why we say, "'Tis the season?" After researching, I discovered that 'tis is an old contraction for "it is". 'Tis the season is a phrase heard during the winter drawing attention to the "holiday season."
'Tis the Season to support sensory needs!
As a special education teacher of students with Autism, Sensory Processing Disorders, and behavioral needs, I hope to draw attention to the sensory needs and support that my students need during ALL seasons!
Our class is moving to a new room for the new year, and my hope is to provide my students with a heavy work area to help manage and allow my students to begin to understand sensory needs! I can imagine the grins on my students faces when they see the new weighted items- sloth, knotted ball, textured balls, and the logs- in our classroom to use on breaks and in times of need! They will provide students with needed sensory input while working at tables and centers throughout our day!
In our classroom, sensory meltdowns will happen even with all our best efforts to prevent them. The keychain fidgets, fidget balls, and noise off headphones and Senseez pillow will help redirect and shorten these meltdowns.
'Tis the Season...Let's support sensory needs now!
