My Students

"I joined the Patriots in 7th grade because I wanted to be part of a family. The hardest part of running is when you want to give up, but you don't. The Patriots gave me role models to look up to." This is a quote from one of our runners from a yearbook.

Many teams develop a culture all based on winning or losing, but we develop a culture based on hard work and taking on challenges to strengthen one mentally.

In our team's history, we have ran distances ranging from 1500m to even a half marathon! Many teams have tryouts, but we accept all students because no matter what size or level one is, they should still have access to the benefits and joy of running. We train in all sorts of weather, including the rain and snow to develop a strong mindset! We've completed tough challenges such as running five bridges in one day! Our runners treat one another like family members inside and outside of school. We have runners who graduated to high school but still return to help the team out!

My Project

Our amazing running team now has over 70 middle school students. Because of that, we need more wrist stopwatches to enhance their training.

We need more wrist stopwatches for our students who cannot afford them.

What we discovered is that giving students time splits and goals during their training and for races are essential to improvement and performance. For example, when we do half mile intervals for training, we provide time splits for each of our runners based on their ability level. It pushes our students to run a good time and know what's actually a good or bad time. Another example is that for races, we give our students splits too. For example, at a past 1500m road race, there is a turnaround where the first 750m and last 750m is the same path. We calculated splits for each of our runners at the halfway point and their projected finish time. Our runners will wear stopwatches (we don't have enough for each of them) and write the splits on their hands to track their own progress. Being self-aware is key.

Because they realize how important times are in their training, many of our runners have purchased more advanced watches on their own and still continue to use them when in high school.
