My students come from low-income families in areas of impoverished neighborhoods in Dallas. Many have parents that speak no English and appropriate resources are lacking in the home. Many of them will say they do not like reading. However, I have seen with my own eyes that being exposed to good, quality texts will change their attitude and maybe even their life.
When they read, their world lights up with excitement and imagination.
This is especially true when the text is tailored to their specific interests and reading level as are the TIME magazine editions. Each week they will have a new set of fun, appealing, and educational texts from which to choose giving them control over what they want to learn about that week. Due to their financial situation, my students rarely have the opportunity to build background knowledge and experience about the world. These magazines will help to fill in that gap.
My Project
Being able to provide quality informative text is critical to the development of students as life long readers. The donations to this project will help provide my students with a subscription to TIME for Kids magazine that will help them help them become engaged in the world while advancing their fluency in English.
I intend to use the magazines as a way to motivate kids to read about real-world topics.
The subscription also includes a digital edition which will allow my students to interact with the text and photos provided by TIME magazine.
My students are considered to be at-risk of not finishing high school. This is usually due to a low level of reading comprehension, particularly of informational text, and partly exacerbated by the fact that they rarely have books available in the home. They must be exposed to high quality, informative, and interesting text to help them advance and give them a chance for success.
