Our room is filled with brilliant, creative, talented, inquisitive, and kind students who come to school ready to learn each day. Most of the children live in poverty and receive free lunch and assistance with other basic necessities. For many of the students, English is their second language.
They struggle with disabilities, come from broken homes and they have not been afforded several of the same opportunities that many of us take for granted as being the "normal" part of childhood.
Still, these small individuals walk through my door hungry for knowledge. We are a family in our room. We listen to one another, inspire each other to do our best, and help each solve problems both in and out of the classroom. These children are the future. They are the next generation of doctors, teachers, scientists and mathematicians.
They believe me when I tell them they can be anything they want to be, and they should. Because it is the grit, and the hard work and the confidence that will carry my students into the future. It is my personal mission, as their teacher, to give them the tools and the courage they need to succeed.
My Project
This project will serve all three classes in third grade. Each student will receive a subscription to Time for Kids Magazine. This will include 28 magazines throughout the year that we will using during our literacy and social studies block. Roughly 60 students will be able to read about current events and topics that impact their lives. They will be invigorated by the interesting articles that teach them about what is going on in their world. Students will develop an understanding of different cultures, animals, inventions and more! They will learn how to develop strong opinions about related articles, and they will be encouraged to take action against topics that are important to them. Student discourse will soar as students develop their reading skills, while having active conversations about their new learning! The third grade teachers are so excited for this potential opportunity!
