My Students

Due to the pandemic, my first graders endured many challenges with learning during their kindergarten year. They come from an extremely impoverished community and rely on the school to be a safe space for them to learn. My students were not in person for much of their kindergarten year, thus missing out on some key opportunities to practice learning through play with their peers.

I would like to give them more opportunities to learn through play and movement instead of traditional worksheets and assessments.

The materials I'm requesting will serve dual purposes. They will offer the children fun choices to practice crucial social skills, such as sharing, speaking to peers, taking turns, cleaning up, responsibility, and the opportunity to use their imagination and creativity. They will also aid in engaging students in our curriculum. Students will be able to practice counting items, adding and subtracting, and ordering numbers with the trains, food, Magna Tiles, and gears, and practice reading and writing skills using the kitchen/restaurant items. Every material will be used and loved daily!

My Project

These children have been through a lot of uncertainty over the past two years. Through no fault of their own, a big change in their lives has been the influx of technology, and it has taken a front seat in many of their lives. But children's development has not changed-they still NEED and CRAVE things that will engage them in the same way that types of technology do. I'd like them to do less Tik Tok'ing and more imagining, less watching other kids play with toys on youtube, and more playing themselves! We have worked hard this year to learn how to SHARE, how to TAKE TURNS, how to ENGAGE, how to CREATE, and how to USE OUR IMAGINATION.

My students love to learn and play and they love to LEARN THROUGH PLAY.

We need some new items in the classroom that allow them to capitalize on these skills and allow them to tap into that part of their brain that learns through play. Whether it's using plastic foods to write a menu or a recipe, using train cars to do addition and subtraction problems, practicing how to solve a social problem with dolls in a dollhouse, or using the scientific method to explore how to build a machine with working gears, children NEED toys that will open their minds up to learning. These toys will be utilized both during whole group lessons and during free choice time. Your donations will be treated kindly, lovingly, and with gratefulness each time they are used in our classroom.
