My students need the Reading and Writing Strategies Books to help me focus on the individual needs of each learner and teach to research based best practices.
The students in my 1st grade classroom are eager to learn to read. They are motivated by a wide selection of texts and a good mix of fiction and non-fiction. These students often come to school with a lower experience with literature than peers in area districts. Our school is in a high poverty area, and all students get free breakfast and lunch.
My 1st grade students are up for the challenge of reading!
They are thirsty to be independent readers and writers and are working hard to be successful.
My Project
Our district is focusing on our state's new Third Grade Reading Law. It begins with my 1st graders this year. The goal is for all students to be successful readers by 3rd grade.
As an educator, I have researched improved ways to teach reading and writing and am interested in streamlining my teaching practices to make the best use of instructional time.
With a financial crunch hitting my district, there are limited funds to create a much needed change. These teacher materials will allow me to focus on the needs of each learner more effectively in a small group setting.
I plan to use these materials to set up focused, small group instruction. As I complete my guided reading level assessments, I will use the Reading Strategies book to focus on the individual needs of each learning. For example, an A level reader has different needs from a H level reader. I will make better use of small group instruction time and really fill the needs of all of my readers in many skill levels. This resource book will help me better define these needs.
Similarly, the Writing Strategies resource book will help me define and meet the needs of my 1st grade writers. Currently, I am pulling from multiple sources to teach my curriculum. This resource will help me streamline my teaching and focus my students' learning.
