Students today are easily distracted in the traditional classroom. Rows? Static seating? Lectures? Just because I teach history doesn’t mean we have to live in it!
My students may come from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds, but their potential for growth and learning is equally amazing.
They are creative thinkers who use their innovative minds to help me make history come to life. Whether they are writing a rap song about life in Egypt or creating a board game about the Greek Empire, they are "movers and shakers" in every sense of the term. My job is to help create a classroom atmosphere that will inspire them to grow. That's where you come in.
Students spend eight hours in school and most of that time is spent sitting in rows. At a time when their bodies are as active as their minds, it's important to give them seating options to help their minds extend outside the confines of a desk.
Flexible seating allows for flexibility in mental growth.
In our classroom, learning is not a spectator sport and requires active engagement and movement. We have already started to change the way my students learn by adding a rug, beanbags and stand up desks to our learning space. These new seating items will be a welcome addition to the "movers and shakers" who inhabit my classroom daily.
