Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Attending a low-income/high poverty school, my students face an opportunity gap that needs to be bridged. Each day we work hard to ensure that gap gets a little bit smaller, but there are often material shortages that stand in our way.

My students are incredible young people who have the potential to change the world.

Every day they come to school ready to try their best and learn new things. I love their curiosity and thirst for knowledge. They deserve to have a classroom library as stellar as they are.

My Project

My students have access to traditional books, both in the classroom and through the school library, but lack the availability of printed news materials. Having periodical, non-fiction reading, like TIME for Kids, in the classroom will help develop my students into global citizens. Students will use these magazines during independent reading centers, at lunch and at home. It will add to their background knowledge as they read new books and help drive their overall understanding of the world we live in.

I'm also hoping access to news media will begin a life long passion for journalism and the importance of the free press in our democracy.
