My Project

I teach three sections of ACT Prep to high school juniors and seniors, and we spend a lot of time working on strategies for each of the four sections. Although the math section includes challenging problems, the bigger problem is timing. Students have 60 minutes to solve 60 complex problems - or one minute per problem. Similarly, the science isn't necessarily difficult, but rather they are asked to analyze 40 pieces of scientific data in 35 minutes.

With time constraints playing a huge role in both the Math and Science sections of the ACT, one of the biggest strategies that I work on with my students is timing, including banking time on easier questions to provide additional time on the more challenging questions.

In class, we use a countdown timer on the Promethean Board, and my students are used to looking at it. We are finding that some testing centers do exactly that - while others just use the clock in the room and display a start and end time.

To ensure consistency for my students, I would like to get small countdown timers and batteries that my students could check out before the tests. That way, my students could use them in whatever testing center they are in.

Because timing is vitally important in both the science and math sections of the ACT, this consistency will give my students the confidence they need to tackle these sections.
