Help me give my students age-appropriate access to current events in order for them to become informed citizens of our community.

My students walk into our classroom every day full of life, ready to learn, and excited for what is in store for them that day. I want them to believe in themselves the way I do. The students in my classroom are comprised of general education students, as well as students with various learning and emotional disabilities. On top of educational and emotional disabilities, many of them have experienced trauma in their lives and have difficulty coming to school.
With that being said, how can we close the achievement gap when students do not have the necessary materials to succeed?
The typical student in my class reads below grade level and many struggle with basic phonics and number sense. Their desire to achieve success in school is the driving force behind our desire to give them the world.
In order for children to become well-rounded citizens, they need to be informed. News outlets share news stories that are not age-appropriate. Time for Kids Magazines publish articles about hot topics at a level 2nd graders can understand as well as filtering out topics children should not have access to. Our students see and experience current events daily, however, Time for Kids allows them access to these events at a level that is appropriate for them. Help us allow our students to form their own opinions on these hot topics now that they have information at their fingertips.
