My Students

The students in my class are sixth, seventh and eighth graders who attend a public middle school in a large, urban school district. The students come from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, and the majority of the students are from low income households.

The students have all been identified as having special learning needs such as auditory processing deficits and attention deficits, which can make it difficult for them to find success in a traditional classroom setting.

In other ways, they are like all students. They are funny, insightful, smart, and interested. They always rise above expectations when given enough time and support.

My Project

Reading is at the core of everything we do as educators. A child who struggles with reading will struggle throughout their schooling. My students need a lot of practice with reading comprehension. The TIME FOR KIDS magazines will provide content that is both interesting to the student and at the appropriate reading level. Students can feel overwhelmed with assigned books, but magazine articles are inviting with the color, the graphics and the short format. My students will be able to read the magazines, and the subscription to the print magazines will give me access to digital teaching materials that connect skills from other content areas to what the students have read.

As a special education teacher, teaching students to read is both the most important and most difficult thing I have to do.

Getting students excited to read is a big first step and these magazines will go a long way toward building that excitement.
