Testing is so hectic these days. Who knew some kids would end up like this, hungry after testing or just hungry period? Has your belly ever growled because you were hungry, because you were late or you missed the bus or the bus didn't come and you had to walk to school, didn't have a place to live or a place to keep food? Some come to school already hungry. This is a reality for lots of children today. One day in class I heard a noise I'd never heard before. It was a noise that was long and loud. It came from a homeless student. It was a growl from her stomach. I had never heard that from one of my student's stomachs. Many of my students come from economically challenged environments. However, they are like some that don't have anything when they get up. These things happen due to many factors beyond their control. Consequently, they enter my classroom hungry and lacking of energy to do their classwork. The breakfast and lunch snacks and food will provide them with the energy needed to make it through the sometimes lengthy academic requirements of the rigorous educational environment. I will provide breakfast snacks for students who miss the bus and miss breakfast. We will also supply take-home snacks and bags for our homeless at-risk students who we know will not have food over into the night or for the weekend. How can you test when your hungry?
