Our art students come from challenging environments in an urban community where aggression is often the answer to many problems. Some of my students have a home, community, and other issues. Some of them have trouble interacting appropriately with one another, teachers, and administrators. Education can make the difference for many of our students. They feel a sense of belonging.
My students come from high crime and poverty-stricken areas.
They don't have access to basic needs.
Many of our students often feel as if no one notices them or acknowledges their positive behavior, only the negative. Our students need multiple opportunities to learn and be successful in many different ways. An adequate education along with extracurricular activities are is the only way some of them will change their lives.
The integration of arts with academics has been a major focus for recent research. Students do better with exposure to arts. My students need basic classroom supplies for art class to be success for the school year. They have various projects that they must complete.
We are requesting art supplies - water colors, markers and olored pencils.
This project will help students be able to discuss their emotions in a positive way during group art activities as well. My students will learn self expression by participating in an Arts feelings group. They will learn about different types of feelings and emotions and how to express them by using art. They will paint pictures to create another outlet for their feelings. Males and females are often told to keep their feelings to themselves. This will be a way that they can learn self-expression in a peaceful manner and not in a shameful way. The wire pieces will allow them to make usable art and discuss different emotions. The puzzles will allow them to design how they feel the world sees them. The craft items will allow them to design how they are feeling at a particular time and how that emotion looks to them or makes them feel.
If students learn self-expression and don't let their feelings build up this will allow them an outlet and time also to resolve any conflicts.
Thus making the world a safer place. They can do this is a comfortable setting with art. This project will encourage social emotional growth and development.
