Many of my students continue to amaze me with their wonderful work ethic and motivation towards a successful future. Some of them I have known since 6th grade. Now they are high school students and face many challenges.
They come from challenging back grounds where they may see verbal and physical aggression as common place communication.
Helping others is one way that we have come up with as a way to improve our self worth and esteem. Rickya, Lorenzo, Alexis and Johnathan alongside their teacher, have been coming up with ways to consistently help the homeless people in our community. It seems that during the holiday people are always helping the homeless community. They live 365 days a year. Who helps them during the other times of the year. The students have been using their free time to brainstorm and collaborate a way to make a difference year around. They want to have a food and hygiene product give away for their project! Rickya dictated the written portion, while Lorenzo used his computer knowledge to research vendor inventory and pricing. Johnathan and Alexis contacted community organizers to organize the giveaway.
My students wan to make an impact on their community. Many of them have been homeless. One day they saw a guy eating out of the trash can behind the building. They wanted to do a food drive so that no one will have to eat out of the trash can again by our school. They students will develop and explore empathy and writing skills to organize this project.

We want to make a difference in our community. One of my friends saw a guy eating out of the garbage can. It was really sad. No one should have to do that. We were discussing it in class with our teacher and decided that we can make a difference.
Lorenzo
Kids can do something to help the community. It might seem small but they can do something. Coordinating this food giveaway will take initiative and problem solving skills. We will also need to coordinate with other agencies and students. We the students are making contacts and leading this project for our school. This will help to develop us as the leaders of tomorrow.
Rickya
No one should be hungry in America today. To see someone eating out of the school trash can was alarming. This project will help feed several families and individuals that might not otherwise have food to eat. This project will help to stamp out hunger for homeless people and families.
