I am a school media specialist in Atlanta, Georgia. My students meet me at the door each day asking if they can check out books. They often have to wait for their favorite books to be returned in order to satisfy their love of reading. It is my focus to provide materials that satisfy this desire.
Our student body is made up of 275 Pre-K through 5th grade students in inner-city Atlanta, GA.
All of our students receive free lunch. Many of the students don't have books at home, and thirst for reading at school. I stretch my minimal budget each year to provide an updated collection of the reading materials that the students and teachers request. Even our preschoolers enjoy reading and being read to. The reading seed has been planted and it is up to us to continue to cultivate it by providing the nutrients that come from literacy. I want to watch them continue to grow through reading. Our focus this year is to raise our students' reading levels. We have identified the levels that our students in grades 3-5 should aspire to reach. When students come in to check their favorite books, they are often already checked out by other library patrons. Having the Kindles will allow students to read the books on the Kindles.
The Kindles will be used in our reading corner we call "The Tiger Treehouse." Students enjoy pulling out the beanbags, pillows, backrests and their stuffed reading buddies during their pleasure reading time. The Kindles will provide an added measure of reading and technology. Even our Pre-K students will benefit from reading books on the Kindles. Students will also be able to have reading partners by sharing the devices and participate in booktalks during the sessions. It's like the old adage states - "If we build it, they will come." If reading materials are available, they will read. Using the Kindles will also assist in technology and research skills. I can't wait to offer this added benefit to our students.
With our dwindling budget getting smaller every year, we can't afford to supply the multiple print versions of the titles that students request the most.
Having the Kindle Korner will help solve the issue of not being able to meet the demands. Having additional reading devices will allow students to spend time reading and increasing their lexile levels. When students are allowed to read the types of literature that interests them, they will read even more. Help us create our Kindle Korner.
