Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from diverse backgrounds speaking more than 11 different languages as their first language. Most come from households where both parents work multiple jobs, yet still have limited resources. My students all speak languages other than English at home. They are marvelous learners who try very hard and are eager to learn new concepts, learn English, and understand the US culture. I love my students because I was a second language learner when I was a kid and can relate to their struggles! I am proud that they can see themselves in the teachers who teach them.

Since I am an ENL teacher, I teach multiple grade levels.

Currently,​ I teach kindergarten, first and fourth grades. Some of my students are classified with special education needs, so kinesthetic and visual tools help them learn better. They often struggle with learning concepts and need multiple and varied ways of presentation.

My Project

After almost two years of remote learning, my students are really struggling to learn letter sounds and form words.

They are highly motivated to learn to read, and having new manipulatives and tools to excite and engage them will solidify their letter-sound acquisition.

The phonemic awareness kit uses kinesthetic strategies to help children touch letters, tap their sounds to help them learn the vowel, blends, and digraphs.

Additionally, playdough also offers a fun way to form letters and research supports that when you use multiple ways to learn, it is more effective!
