Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students need to move, move, move to help them learn. I need them to manipulate materials and interact with each other to help them retain information they are learning and to make it more meaningful! The more hands on and the more fun, the better!
The majority of my students are language learners and all but one qualify for free or reduced price lunch.
Many of them are struggling with basic concepts and are battling personal challenges at home. Those who are at or above grade level need to be challenged and kept motivated to explore and push themselves to go farther. I feel the more they are exposed to all of the wonderful things in the world, the more likely they will pursue higher education.
My Project
One area where my students are struggling is with telling time. They really need to understand how a clock works and how the minute hand drags the hour hand around. I only have one large clock for teaching, but they all really need their own to touch and feel it. So many of them are struggling with elapsed time and I know this will be an invaluable tool for them to "see" time go by!
As for the Scholastic News magazine, this is an awesome resource for exposing students to scientific discoveries and things that are going on in the world on a day to day basis. There are so many great articles that debate current issues like global warming and legislation against plastic bags! Part of the common core standards is for students to be able to express their own opinions about a topic learned and back it up with valid reasons. What an effective and inexpensive tool to use!
Any time students are able to see things in color, with pictures, and be able to manipulate it, they are more likely to retain information and to be more engaged in learning about it.
I am hoping these tools will motivate my students to stay focused and interested in the topics and concepts we are learning.
