Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are bright, imaginative makers who learn best when art, engineering, and hands-on design intersect. In our classroom, we encourage students to think outside the box, experiment with raw materials, and solve creative problems. For many of them, creating something functional from scratch builds a lasting sense of confidence and pride in their work.

How This Project Transforms Learning

By combining clay sculpting with functional clock mechanisms, students take on the role of both artists and engineers:

STEAM Integration: Students apply principles of geometry, measurement, and mechanical assembly while designing a fully operational clock face.

Sculpting & Fine Motor Skills: Working with clay allows students to practice slab-building, pinching, and carving techniques to shape personalized clock designs.

Problem-Solving & Spatial Reasoning: Designing a working clock requires precision—students must plan where the mechanism fits, map out accurate hour markers, and balance aesthetics with utility.

Pride of Ownership: Rather than creating a static art piece, students will build a functional item they can take home and display for years to come.
