My music students need simple instruments to help them celebrate and participate in the first music class our school has had in years.

"You're our music teacher?" "We have music class? Yessss!" "My class has been dying for something like this." There's no doubt that our school is excited about having a music class for our pre-kindergarteners through 8th graders. It's been years since there's been a budget opportunity for such a class and as a former fifth grade teacher in the building, I've been nominated to take on the job. While we have ample excitement for the upcoming class, funding is another story. In fact, the principal laughed when I asked about the instrument budget. So I'm on my own to find resources for my excited students. This grant is written for basic instruments that any student, age 4-14, will be able to use and enjoy. The first instruments are marketed as "heavy-duty drums." The 4 hand held drums come with one mallet each and guarantee the strength to hold up against the enthusiasm of 450 students. They'll be used to set the tempo for rhythm games, to play along with student and professional musicians, and in improvisation games. The next instruments of this grant are a dozen eggs...a dozen shaker eggs, that is. The plastic eggs are filled with small beads that make soft, percussive noises when shaken. The eggs are small enough for kindergarten hands and come in bright colors. I checked several teacher supply sites and these come with the best reviews for durability. Finally, what would music class be without maracas? These 6 special maracas are crafted from dried gourds, opening up conversations about making and found instruments as well as places in the world where gourd maracas are used in music. The maracas will truly support our exploration of world music and give the students an initial connection, making the music more meaningful. Your contributions to this grant would be much appreciated; the students' learning will grow exponentially with hands-on instruments in music class. We can't wait to fill the room with the noises of percussion: Thump! Shake! Chuh-chuh!
