Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students can be described as resilient, outspoken, brave and resourceful. These students commute from all over city to ensure they get a quality education and achieve their goals.

Last year, these specific students were able to grow in both math and reading on their end of year standardized tests by over 13%!

Their reading growth was in part by having the opportunity to read books that were relevant to their own experiences. These students are deserving of opportunities like this to see people who look like them on the big screen, the producer list, the soundtrack, etc.

My Project

Students in the 8th grade are taking a trip to see the movie The Hate U Give. The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas is a book that was pivotal in helping our students grow in reading last year. They were invested in their reading of a book about a neighborhood like their's and a plight similar to theirs. Using the curriculum by BazanEd, Students will be able to make comparisons between the novel, as well as the interpretation of the movie. Most importantly, students will be able to make some real-life connections between the book, the movie, and the society in which they live. This will be a wonderful experience for students, and it will definitely be memorable.
