My Students

As I reflect on my experience as a teacher, I think back on all the long nights writing lesson plans, the tears I shed worrying that I would not make a difference and all the time I prayed that my students would have nothing but happiness and success in their lives. Teaching has been one of the most difficult and stressful experiences of my life, but by far, the most rewarding.

Despite the hardships that no eight or nine year old should have to face, my students arrived daily with the dedication and motivation needed to succeed.

Living in a low income/high poverty community with very little educational and emotional support from home, my students had to overcome many challenges in and out of school on a daily basis. From arriving to school hungry due to another dinner-less night to crying on my shoulder before class starts because they miss their dad who is in jail, my students do not have it easy. As their teacher, it is my job to inspire my students to not only rise above the difficulties of life, but to be kind to one another, always seek knowledge and to have a love for reading.

My Project

In my third grade classroom, I often promote group discussions during my lessons in order to give my students the opportunities to share connections, understandings, predictions and so much more. In a classroom that holds 30+ students, this can easily, become very difficult. I spend a lot of time encouraging students to use their strong voices so everyone can hear, just to have to repeat what is being said. When I stumbled upon a video of teacher utilizing the Qball in her classroom, I knew just what my students needed, a throwable microphone. This lightweight, foam ball, equipped with a microphone inside is what I foresee to change the atmosphere within my classroom during whole group lessons and Socratic Seminars. Not only will students be able to hear one another, but they will be motivated to collaborate with their peers.

By donating to our project, you will be helping to improve student engagement, as well as increase student's academic achievement.

As group discussions commence, and the Qball is being passed from student to student, their voices are heard, participation increases, and most importantly, students are learning.
