Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from broken homes, and many go home each day to an unstable environment where they often do not eat dinner, or they have to watch their siblings or work every night. Some are being raised by single-parents, aunts, uncles, or guardians. Through all this, my students work hard. Many just simply cannot afford the simplest supplies needed to be successful in school.

I work in a Title I high school where over 80% of the students are on free and reduced-price lunch.

I want my students to never have to worry about school supplies so their focus can be on learning. Additionally, my students struggle to speak loudly and clearly which can hinder the language learning process. I want to find fun ways to encourage them to speak up, which allows other students to practice their listening skills as well.

My Project

My students lack the confidence to speak loudly during oral practice activities. This has a trickle-down effect because then other students cannot hear what is said, and often the activity falls apart. I want to incorporate this microphone into our lessons so that all students can be heard, and thus prepared for their turn. This style of microphone will also help with student engagement, and I know my teenagers will love getting to toss it to their friends.

The Qball is a throwable wireless microphone, wrapped in durable foam and soft enough for students to toss back and forth during classroom activities.

It increases student participation and engagement. Students know their voice is heard and valued, and feel empowered.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
