My Students

"The beautiful thing about learning is that no one can take it away from you"- BB King. These could not be truer words about my students. I teach in an inner city community in Charlottesville VA where many families come from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Many of my students have faced difficulties that are beyond the normal problems of a 7/8 year old. Many of the students in my class receive a free or reduced cost breakfast and lunch.

Despite hardships, my classroom is full of the most lively and energetic students.

Each day I am greeted with hugs and "I love yous." My students truly value learning and grab at any opportunity to learn new things to help them become better readers and writers.

My Project

All students want to connect to books. Children love to see themselves through the eyes of an author or illustrator. The easiest connection a student can make is relating to characters physical appearance or their experiences. My project is to improve our classroom library by adding books which reflect diversity and inclusion. Although our world is always evolving, one thing stay relevant: the need to feel resented and included. I want to build a classroom library that is an accurate representation of my students and promotes positive experiences through culturally inclusive literature. Doing this will enhance my students already eager thirst for reading.
