Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students in our school are unique, loving , and eager learners. I see the way in which they yearn for knowledge. They want to know the "why?" of anything, and everything. Curiosity is their middle name, and they are proud about it too.
I have the unrivaled privilege of teaching, and helping students every day .
We live in a border town, and most students are second language learners. Not only that, but many of them come from low income house holds as well. Despite all of the complications, and factors working against them, they prevail. Weather it be struggling to read mazes of words, or perfecting getting their thoughts across; They are troopers when it comes to learning, and show no fear. Experts in their first language, and trainee's in their second, they are some of the smartest people I have ever had the pleasure of interacting with.
I have the greatest respect, and admiration for the way they push themselves beyond what they thought possible. In life, limitations are what you program yourself to believe, and not what your capabilities allow you to be. Our students have taught me that.
My Project
Reading books is a luxury that every child deserves to experience. Giving students the opportunity to apprehend this, is what I strive to accomplish. I work as an interventionist at an elementary school, and I have been trying to expose students to reading as much as I can. The problem is that we are so new, and so tiny, that the school lacks a library. Reading is something that I have extreme respect, and love for. My favorite memories of my childhood, involve books that I was reading at the time. Nothing would bring me joy the way books did.
I would love to give our students the opportunity to make their own memories with these exceptional, and magical books.
My dream is to create a reading corner for them. I don't want to stick books in shelves, and be lifeless. I want books to be displayed, come alive. To have students that require interventions, look at the reading corner, and feel exited about the adventures they will experience. I want them to think "Where should I travel through today." We have second language struggling readers, and having books on display will surely catch their attention. If I can plant the seed in their hearts for reading, if I can spark in them the love for books, I know it will follow them through their entire life time.
During my interventions, I can use the reading corner to work on independent, and group reading . Students will have a quiet, and designated space to work on their skills. I am planning on having students record themselves reading through seesaw. To create digital portfolios, and have parents be a part of their reading advancement. The opportunities these item's would create for my teaching, and my students learning, would be life changing.
