Help me give my students a multi-sensory academic learning environment where they are able to immerse themselves in a variety of sights, textures, sounds, and movements to increase their ability for self-regulation, higher learning, and independence!
As an occupational therapist, I have had the chance to be a part of the development and learning opportunities of so many amazing young individuals, their teachers, school teams, and their families. I work with children in Davis County from kindergarten to twelfth grade with a range of abilities and disabilities that requires a more unique and specialized learning experience. The majority of my students have high sensory needs and physical impairments that make personal, social, and academic activities more difficult. They benefit from specific environments and experiences to regulate and participate in their daily activities including feeding, playing, communicating, writing, and so much more.
These amazing children light up their homes, classrooms, playgrounds, and community with their beautiful personalities, loving demeanor, and unique perspectives.
Though my students may not move, behave, or sometimes look like their peers, they love to be with friends, family, and other students enjoying the basics of life. They love the opportunity to learn through play and sensory opportunities that help increase their success in daily activities. These kids thrive when presented with the opportunity to move and play to learn.
My Project
The requested resources will be used to help students participate in the learning environment. First, sensory items will be used to help students regulate their sensory needs. A range of tactile, proprioceptive, vestibular, and visual items can help a student feel regulated and ready to learn.
Multi-sensory items will be used to facilitate fine motor, gross motor, self-care, handwriting, communication, play, and reading activities at school.
These multi-sensory items will be used in both individual sessions and classroom group sessions to help increase a range of skills to help students increase their participation in classroom activities. The focus will be tactile, visual, auditory, and kinesthetic opportunities for letter recognition, phonetics, motor control, and fine motor strength. These types of multi-sensory learning opportunities will help give the body the opportunity to process information through a variety of sensory experiences.
Lastly, the multi-sensory and adaptive items will allow for students with different abilities to still be involved in important school activities with their peers. Also, these resources will give them the opportunity to participate more fully in the school environment.
