"I wish we could go on field trips!" This is what I hear my students say after they have seen a tv show about students visiting other places. My school is a low-income school in which most of the students live in apartments, are low-income, and have little or no availability to knowing what a field trip looks like. Having the chance to visit some place far away as fifth graders will allow them to start setting goals now for where they want to go in the future.
Fifth-graders are normally eager learners, and giving them any advantage I can to be successful is my goal as a teacher.
Knowing what they need to do to get themselves focused on their own, without my help, will be a big help to them as they move on to middle school. As a Seven Habits Lighthouse School, we try to Begin with the End in Mind, so knowing what we want to do before we start is important to us. I want to help my students know what they need to do to be successful learners, including knowing when and how to set goals for life.
Field trips are a vital experience for all students, and with monies being short these days (especially in a Title I school like ours!) they are few and far between. I want to encourage my students to know that there is life outside the walls of their apartment buildings and even beyond the walls of their school. Having this tool at our finger tips will allow us to visit places all around the world.
Traveling the world sparks knowledge as well as imagination and brings us all closer together.
Our school mission statement includes the line "We are a community of global Leaders and learners..." Having these Google Expeditions will allow us to be just that.
