Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach an 8th grade class of 23 motivated and hardworking students at a Waldorf-inspired charter school. They are a close-knit class and care deeply for each other. Most of them have been going to school together since kindergarten. They are sympathetic to the needs of others and are very involved in the leadership of the school. These students are theatrical and have great senses of humor. They are artists, writers, scientists, athletes, and so much more! I want to give my students the best materials available so they can open their minds to the wide scope of the world and help them develop to their fullest potential!
My Project
Enrique's Journey is a true story about a boy from Honduras who travels to the United States in search of his mother who left years before to look for work. The author is an investigative journalist who recreates Enrique's route to understand the reasons behind leaving and the perils immigrants face while trying to reach the United States. This book will support lessons on immigration and help students understand the complexities of immigration and our diverse communities. Bill Nye's book Unstoppable will help address a topic on everyone's minds: climate change. Students will enjoy Bill Nye's sense of humor but also his optimistic view of how humanity can reverse climate change and its effects.
Both books shed light on important, modern topics that kids hear about often, but aren't given enough opportunities to talk and learn about.
By supporting this project, you will give my students and all future classes this opportunity. Both books contain the theme of hope that I think is really important for young people today.
Finally, all three books are excellently written and will be used for language arts classes.
