Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Play is an often overlooked essential piece of Kindergarten that helps develop a life-long love of learning. Time is at a premium in Kindergarten and STEM activities are often pushed aside for the important development of early reading skills. My class loves hands-on STEM activities.
My class is a class of 25 kindergartners with unique personalities and varying academic levels ranging from kindergarten to 2nd grade.
We are a kindergarten ICT class, 40% special education students and 60% regular education students. My students are part of a larger school community of about 700 students. Compared to other New York City Schools we are much smaller. While our small size has a lot of pros there are also many cons; one being the lack of space that our school has along with a smaller budget. While we try to use our budget wisely providing a great number of resources for our students, we often do not have many of the things that we need to help all our students be successful.
My Project
STEM activities are often overlooked in Kindergarten as we are in a rush to develop early readers. These activities will allow myself and co-teachers to work with small groups of kids in reading while others are busy creating the buildings, boats and cars of the future. Students will get to develop engineering, math and science skills while using their new reading and writing skills to solve STEM problems.
We are eager to build and create, hopefully becoming the future engineers of the world!

My students get to develop STEM problem solving skills using engaging activities that incorporated much needed PLAY! They develop a life-long love of learning and learn how to investigate and learn on their own. They get the benefit of small group reading and math instruction as well. It is a win-win for everyone!
