Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

It is well known that many famous scientists are also excellent musicians. Why? What is it about music that enhances scientific thought processes? My students and I would like to undertake a study of sound and music and see if we can discover some relations between music and science. In order to do this, we must first study sound and sounds waves and understand how the human brain processes these waves. The Lawrence Hall of Science, in conjunction with the National Science Foundation, has developed a kit that examines the science of sound. This kit, known as a FOSS kit, addresses all of the central ideas necessary for students to gain a thorough knowledge of the science of sound. The kit is fully aligned to the California Content Standards for science. If I could get one of these kits, I would be able to introduce my 90 students to the science of sound and music. This would be a fabulous project and I hope that my students would not only gain an appreciation of the science of sound, but also might come to understand how music plays a vital role in the lives of many scientists. I teach 8th grade science at Hoover School in Redwood City, California. More than 80% of my students are eligible for free or reduced price lunches, so there is not extra money at home for these students to engage in music lessons of any kind. The budget is very tight at school and we do not have money to purchase the FOSS kit. I have a science degree as well as a music degree and I appreciate the connection between music and science. I would like to share this connection with my students. This kit can be used for many years to come. Thank you for your support of this project.
